My musical journey started back in the sixth grade when my parents rented an alto saxophone so I could join the school band. After that first lesson I was hooked. I pursued the saxophone seriously thru high school and eventually was awarded a saxophone scholarship to study music at the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign. I went on to complete my Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Music Education at U of I. During my time studying music I have had the privilege of performing under the batons of many world renowned conductors, including Dr. William Revelli, Colonel Arnold Gabriel, Dr. Harry Begian, Dr. Frederick Fennell, James F. Keene, Alfred Watkins, Gary Green, Joseph Kreines, and Dr. Bruce Moss. I feel extremely fortunate for having had the chance to study under such gifted educators, and I often find myself referring back to the lessons I learned from them while I am directing my own ensembles.
Although I love teaching and giving back to younger generations of musicians, I have a strong passion for performing as well. I have an extensive performance background in jazz, classical, and popular music. My performance experience includes sessions with the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, Motown legend Martha Reeves & the Vandellas, the classic 60's rock band The Buckinghams, Chicago's own Blooze Brothers Band, & the House Band at Buddy Guy's Legends. I also perform regularly with my own jazz combos The Dan Moffett Trio and The Swing Collective. In 2015 I recorded an album of all original jazz compositions on the Bradley Williams label title "Workin' Overtime" which is available on iTunes.
I am currently a member of the Jazz Faction Big Band, an 18 piece Chicago jazz ensemble that features current and/or past members of the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra, the Buddy Rich Big Band, the Sammy Davis Jr. Orchestra, the Spinners, Gladys Knight and the Pips, the Temptations, Frankie Avalon, the Ojays, Bobby Vinton, Lawrence Welk, Rosemary Clooney, and Louie Bellson among others.
For the past 20 years I have been a member of the Eight Ball Saxophone Quartet, a small chamber group that specializes in music from all genres, including classical literature as well as jazz standards and popular music. I also serve as tenor saxophonist with Soul Vaccination, a popular classic rock/soul band that headlines many music and summer fests in and around Chicago. In addition, I freelance and sub with several local jazz, rock, and dance bands in the Chicago area.
I am currently on staff at Komarek School in North Riverside where I instruct all instrumental music courses and ensembles. In addition to teaching at Komarek, I also currently serve as adjunct professor of saxophone at Benedictine University in Lisle, IL. My duties at Benedictine include teaching applied saxophone lessons to music majors and minors, establishing a curriculum for the saxophone studio, and preparing students for their final playing examinations each semester. I am active as a saxophone clinician and adjudicator throughout the Chicago land area. I currently maintain a private studio for young saxophonists in Westmont; my teachings focus on fundamentals, tone, expression, and on developing proficient technique thru the study of classical and jazz literature. I am currently sponsored by Conn-Selmer, Inc. as an Artist-Endorser, and I am proud to perform on and endorse Selmer saxophones.
